Cancer Health Resource Library- Print & Internet

The Cary Cancer Center in Hannibal, Missouri, tries to ensure that the most trusted, up-to-date health information resources are available to you.  Our tech-savvy staff stay current with the best free content on the Internet. These links will connect you to noted information cancer web sites. Books and other printed materials are still the most available source of information and we highly encourage their use in our health resources library. It is open to the public and completely free of charge.

  • Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education (ALCASE):
    Dedicated solely to helping people at risk for and living with lung cancer.  Programs include psychosocial support services, education, early detection, treatments, as well as advocacy issues.

  • Alternative Medicine: Site offers links to the indexes, guides and directories of health sites. Start here to avoid ads in alternative and complementary medicine.

  • American Cancer Society, Inc. (ACS): Dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

  • American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR): Focuses on the link between diet and cancer, supports research in this field nationwide and provides a wide range of free educational publications.

  • Cancer Care, Inc: Provides free professional counseling, support groups, education and information, and referrals to cancer patients and their families to help them cope with the psychological and social consequences of cancer.

  • Cancer Hope Network: Offers one-on-one support to cancer patients undergoing cancer treatment and their families using trained volunteers who have survived cancer.

  • Cancer Research Institute: Supports leading-edge research aimed at developing immunologic methods of preventing, treating, and curing cancer.

  • CAPHIS: Web Sites You Can Trust: A directory of 100 quality health information sites collected, evaluated and reviewed by the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of the Medical Library Association.

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Full-text of CDC data on statistics, fact sheets, traveler's health, prevention guidelines, bioterrorism, infectious diseases, and more. Includes Spanish.

  • Clinical Trials: Current information about clinical research studies. The registry features information on nearly 4,000 clinical trials occurring in 50,000 different locations, involving drugs, herbals, and alternative therapies.

  • Cure for Lymphoma Foundation: Offers support and educational programs to patients and caregivers.  Funds lymphoma research and collaborates with lymphoma researchers, clinicians, social workers and nurses.

  • Drug Information (MedlinePlus): Information on thousands of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

  • Healthfinder: Free gateway to reliable consumer health and human services information developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Includes Spanish.

  • Household Products Database: Easy-to-understand information on the potential health effects of more than 2,000 ingredients contained in more than 4,000 common household products. From the National Institutes of Health.

  • International Cancer Alliance ( ICA ): Provides a free Cancer Therapy Review which includes description, detection and staging, treatment, diagnostic test and clinical trials for a specific type of cancer.

  • The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation: Dedicated to eradicating breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.  Awards millions of dollars in grants and fellowships annually for ground-breaking breast cancer research.

  • Lab Tests Online: Produced by a collaboration of professional societies representing the lab community, this site is designed to help the patient or caregiver to better understand the many clinical lab tests that are part of routine care as well as diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions and diseases.

  • The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: Dedicated to seeking the cause and eventual cure of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

  • Mayo Clinic: Comprehensive collection of health information sponsored by the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

  • MEDEM Health Care Information: Click on Medical Library to access patient education information. All of MEDEM's health care information has been provided and approved by the nation's leading medical societies.

  • MedlinePlus Consumer Health Info: The most up-to-date quality health care information on the Internet. Sponsored by the National Library of Medicine. Includes Spanish.

  • National Breast Cancer Coalition: A grassroots advocacy organization whose goals are to increase federal funding for breast cancer research, influence how those dollars are spent and improve access to high quality healthcare for all women.

  • National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN): Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology- The standard for clinical policy in oncology, these guidelines cover more than 95% of all cancers, and are updated at least annually.

  • National Cancer Institute (NCI): For cancer treatment, screening, prevention, and supportive care.  For up to date information on clinical trials.  Provides information by fax on cancer prevention, treatment, screening and supportive care.

  • National Coalition for Cancer Research (NCCR): A coalition focused on increasing federal support for cancer research.  Operates as a forum to educate the public and policy makers regarding the essential contributions of basic science and clinical research toward improving cancer detection, treatment, prevention and survival, and ultimately eradicating cancer.

  • National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS): Leads and strengthens the survivorship movement, empowers cancer survivors, and advocates for policy issues that affect cancer survivors’ quality of life.

  • National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization: Hospice help line helps callers find a hospice in their area.

  • NIH Senior Health: From the National Institutes of Health, a new talking Web site with formats and topics tailored to the needs of older people. A resource for the best information on health and medical research.

  • National Prostate Cancer Coalition: A grassroots advocacy organization seeking to increase research funds that will help to achieve the mission of ending prostate cancer.

  • NOAH - New York Online Access to Health: NOAH seeks to provide high quality full-text health information for consumers that is accurate, timely, relevant and unbiased. Includes Spanish.

  • Ovarian Cancer National Alliance: A consumer-led umbrella organization dedicated to educating the public, and the physicians who are likely to first encounter the disease, about its symptoms, and advocating for more research, improved treatments and a cure.

  • Partnership for Caring: America ’s Voices for the Dying: Advocates recognition and protection of individual rights at the end of life.  Provides counseling regarding preparing and using living wills and durable powers of attorney for healthcare. 

  • PubMed Medline: Free access to Medline back to 1966 from The National Library of Medicine. This link also includes the print journal holdings for the Affinity Libraries as well as links to some of our full-text.

  • RxList - The Internet Drug Index: Reliable information and links on more than 4,000 drug products.

  • The Skin Cancer Foundation: The only national and international organization dedicated solely to the world’s most common cancer.  Conducts public and professional education programs and supports medical training to help reduce the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of skin cancer.

  • WebMD: Objective, credible and trusted source of consumer health information. Access to health and wellness news, support communities, interactive health management tools and more.
